Social studies or citizenship test in Norway?

Understand Samfunnskunnskapsprøven and Statsborgerprøven, their shared subject material and the importance of the language used for the official test.

An English explanation can help you understand Norwegian public test names. It does not mean that every test is available in English, or that a result in one language can be used for every application. Start with the exact test and the purpose for which you need its result.

Samfunnskunnskapsprøven is the social studies test. Statsborgerprøven is the citizenship test. They are different tests with shared subject material. Norskprøven, the Norwegian language test, is a separate assessment. Learning facts about Norway does not automatically provide evidence of Norwegian speaking skills.

A certificate with an important missing detail

Imagine that Priya finds an old social studies test certificate while organising her documents. A friend says she should book the citizenship test immediately because the names are different. Another friend says any social studies certificate must already be sufficient. Neither answer has checked the language of her test or the requirements for her particular application.

Priya writes down the exact test name, date, language and result. She then checks the official requirements for her purpose. This example is about reading documentation; it does not decide whether she qualifies for permanent residence or citizenship.

QuestionWhy it matters
Which test did I take?Similar everyday names can conceal different assessments
In which language?Language can affect how the result may be used
What does the result document?A social knowledge result is not every language qualification
What is my application?Different purposes have different conditions
Who decides? The responsible authority assesses the individual application

Study language and test language

HK-dir explains that the social studies test is available in several languages, including English. If the social studies test is to be used for Norwegian citizenship, it must have been taken in Norwegian. The citizenship test itself is in Norwegian, with Bokmål and Nynorsk options.

HK-dir describes the Norwegian wording of the citizenship test as A2 level, while the Norwegian wording of the social studies test is above A2. This describes the language of those tests. It is not a statement that passing either test replaces all separate Norwegian language requirements for citizenship. Check the relevant UDI guidance for the complete requirements and any exceptions.

Use the shared official subject material

HK-dir points to Samfunnskunnskap.no for the material shared by the two tests. Its topics include education and working life, family and health, and Norway’s history and democracy. Use that structure to make a study plan rather than relying on a collection of disconnected facts.

For one learning session, choose a topic such as the distinction between municipality and state. Explain an original everyday example in English, then learn the Norwegian terms used in the official material. In the next session, explain why a plausible alternative answer is wrong. A useful explanation connects the rule, institution and situation; it does not claim to reproduce confidential examination questions.
