Taxi driver test or operator exam in Norway?
An English explanation of the driver, operating business and Norwegian document names, with a way to identify the correct official test.
Searching for a “taxi test” in Norway can lead to two different qualifications. One concerns the person who drives passengers. The other concerns the competence required to operate a taxi business. Learn the Norwegian names before booking, even if you prefer to study the explanation in English.
Teoriprøven for drosje is the taxi driver theory test. Løyveeksamen for drosje is the taxi operator licence examination. A kjøreseddel is the passenger transport driver permit. A drosjeløyve concerns the operating business. None of these names means the same thing as an ordinary category B driving licence.
Follow the role through the paperwork
Consider an imaginary recruitment meeting. A transport company asks Alex for documents before offering driving work. Alex has a course attendance certificate with “taxi” on the front. The certificate does not identify which public examination, if any, he has passed. The employer needs the actual document and the relevant driver permissions, not a broad course label.
Later, Alex considers operating his own business. He now has a second set of questions about operator competence and the licence application. His experience as an employee does not by itself answer those questions. If he also drives, the personal driver requirements remain a separate matter.
| Norwegian term | The question it helps you ask |
|---|---|
| Førerkort klasse B | Do I have the required driving entitlement? |
| Drosjesjåførkompetanse | What taxi driver competence must I document? |
| Kjøreseddel | What driver permit do I need? |
| Løyveeksamen | How do I document operator competence? |
| Drosjeløyve | What authorisation does the business need? |
English study does not mean an English public examination
Statens vegvesen states that both the taxi driver theory test and the taxi operator examination are taken in Norwegian. Its guidance says an interpreter cannot be used. Check the specific official page for arrangements and any application for adaptation rather than assuming that an English learning resource changes the examination conditions.
The authority provides different topic information for the examinations. Use the list for your actual role. Practising passenger situations can support driver understanding, but it does not demonstrate that you have studied the full operator syllabus. A private practice score is not an official examination result.
Build a useful bilingual notebook
Choose one official topic and write its Norwegian heading beside a plain English explanation. Add an original example and one question you still need to clarify. For instance, separate the person driving from the company issuing the transport agreement. This helps you connect vocabulary to responsibility instead of memorising a translation without context.
Before booking, read the complete test name on the reservation. After passing, distinguish the result from the later permit or licence decision. Recognition of foreign qualifications and individual exemptions must be checked through the official process; this article cannot approve them.
